Pregnancy is not an illness, nor should it be considered as one. Maternity reflexology is only undertaken by those specially trained in the techniques most appropriate for this time, so that both mother and baby can benefit.
Whether a woman decides to come for maternity reflexology is wholly her decision. Treatments early on in a pregnancy are more gentle and relaxing to help the newly pregnant mother to be cope with the abundant changes taking place.
As the pregnancy continues, any minor complaints or problems can be targeted in the treatment, to help provide relief from such things as constipation, sciatica, fluid retention and backache to name just a few.
Towards the end of pregnancy and approaching the time of delivery, more emphasis is placed on preparing the mother and foetus for labour, and if needs be and if appropriate helping prime the body for labour.
Many women report feeling more relaxed, sleeping better, suffering less with common pregnancy associated problems, and that labour has been an enjoyable experience.
“Women who actively choose to receive regular reflexology during pregnancy have been shown to gain a degree of relaxation that indirectly impacts on the developing foetus”. (Motha & McGrath 1993).
